Chapter 4
Matt finds his way back to the room and again snuggles up to Ellen. "Ellen, baby are you asleep?" Placing his chin on her shoulder.
Not opening her eyes. "Yes I am." She answered.
"Baby I'm not tired, I'm too wired to sleep."
"Matt drink some warm milk."
"I don't want any milk." Stroking the length of her arm.
"What do you want?"
"I think you know the answer to that." Snuggling closer to her.
"You don't give up do you?"
"No. But look I know you're tired so just…could I lie in your arms until I drift off? I promise I'll be good."
"Okay." Ellen agrees.
Matt wraps his arms around Ellen and lays his head on her chest.
"So what's got you so wired?" She asked stroking his hair still in a semi-sleepy state.
"I guess it's the trip. I'm really looking forward to that. I mean really looking forward to it. And I've been thinking you know Angel's getting older, and Matty he thought that you were pregnant why not let it happen."
Her eyes pop open. "Let what happen? You're not suggesting…."
"Why not Ellen? It's a perfect time. You're fertile right now." Caressing her abdomen.
"I'm fertile? You make me sound like soil."
"Ellen you know what I mean. I know how your body works and right now until this weekend is a perfect time for you to conceive. You know Matty could have a brother or sister born on the same day he was. And the spacing in years is perfect. I think we should do it."
"You've been saying "that" all night. A baby Matt?"
"Yes, Ellen we make beautiful babies."
Shaking her head as if to clear away the cobwebs. "There's the phrase. I should have known this conversation was coming. It's that time again huh?"
"What time?"
"The time that comes around once every two to three years or so, when you get into that 'Ellen we should have another baby mode'."
"I don't have any 'Ellen we should have another baby mode'. What are you talking about?"
"Ah let's not play that innocent act." Now wide awake Ellen sits up and turns on the lamp on her night stand as Matt lays back on his pillow. "It started a few months after Matty was born, 'Ellen we should have another baby', but I really wasn't hearing that then. About three years later you're saying it again, so we have Angel. What's with this baby talk now? Matt we've done this to death, we're not having anymore children. You know this. We decided that a long time ago."
"It couldn't have been that long ago, Angel's not even five."
"Matt I could do this whole conversation alone. You'll list the pros, and I'll list the cons. The cons always outweigh the pros. We're not having anymore children. We don't have the time for a baby, we're working so much as it is we barely have time for the two children we have, much less time to make a baby let alone raise one."
"We'll find a way."
"Yeah right. You say that now, Mr. Ellen's it's been a week since we made love. You know there's a six week wait with babies. What prompted this anyway? What?" Crossing her arms at her chest and giving him a look as the light bulb in her head went off. "Is that it? Get me riled up where I'm awake so you can wear me down, so to speak?"
"Ellen I'm shocked." Putting on the innocent act. "Would I do that?" Placing his hand his hand on his chest.
"Yes you would." Taking a throw pillow and hitting him with it. "I don't believe you."
"I just wanted to talk with you Ellen come on, I knew that would get your attention. I wanted to tell you I talked with Matty."
"And this couldn't wait until tomorrow?"
"It could have, but I was awake now."
"But I wasn't." Sighing as she laid her head on her pillow, "Talk Matt."
"Well, long of the short, Matty is just at a curious age. Appears Tommy's nineteen-year old brother Josh was "entertaining" while Matty was there and his "friend" was calling for Josh like you were calling for me. Draw your own conclusions. But for now our little boy is still that, he has no clue as to how babies are made. Well he knows a man and a woman have to do "it" but he doesn't know what it is they do, however I was taken aback there for a minute."
"They do it?"
"That's what he said Ellen."
"And you believed him when he said he didn't know?"
"Yes I believe him, he doesn't know."
"You think? Come on Matt it's the year 2011, things are a lot different then when we were nine. Matty reads all the time, you really don't think he knows where babies come from. He snowed you." Laughing out loud. "I bet he couldn't get away from you fast enough."
"Why wouldn't he tell me if he knew?"
"How would he? I think he knows in words but not actions. How was he gonna explain that. He probably felt cornered, poor fella."
"Poor fella? Wasn't it you who told me I needed to talk with him about that?"
"Yes and you tried, maybe I should give it a shot tomorrow."
"No, that's my job. Matty is going to learn the facts of life from me, you're having "your" talk with Angel. I'll talk with Matty again sometime when we get back." Changing the subject from Matty. "You know I'm still not tired." Stroking her face with his forefinger. "You don't look so tired now either."
"That's because I'm not. I suddenly have this incredible burst of energy. I really need to burn it off."
"I feel the same way, an incredible energy surge." Easing closer to her.
"You know I think I have the perfect way to get rid of it." Stroking his chest.
"I'm listening."
"First of all I think I should get rid of this flannel gown, it would only get in the way."
"You're right it will only be in the way." Attempting to help her discard the gown.
"No I don't need any help I can do it." Slinking out of the bed.
"Just wanted to be helpful." He added with a smile.
"Of course you did." Removing the gown, she heads to the dresser. "You don't mind if I borrow something of yours do you?"
"What's mine is yours you know that, but what you need is over here in this bed."
"Not right now it's not." Slipping on one of his tee shirts and a pair of his too large jogging pants and a pair of socks.
Sitting up in the bed. "Ellen what are you doing?"
"I'm gonna go burn off this energy."
"You don't think you're a little overdressed? I think my clothes look really sexy on you, but they're not really needed right now."
"Of course they are. I'm going to go workout in the exercise room. What were you thinking?"
"Ellen you don't exercise."
"Well I do tonight. And maybe with any luck I'll do enough that I'll be tired when I get back here and then maybe I can get some rest."
"Baby you're gonna break something, and I don't just mean my equipment. You don't know what you're doing, I'll come with you."
"No you stay here. I might not know what I'm doing, but I do know what you did. So while I'm in your gym, I want you to stay here in our bed alone and repeat in your mind over and over 'I won't pull a fast one on Ellen anymore', and maybe tomorrow we can try this again. Goodnight Matt." She heads out the door.
"Ellen…Ellen…ah damn." Matt flops his head back on the pillow in defeat.
