Chapter 2
Matt had just finished his shift at the
hospital and was checking out for the day. Much to his displeasure as he was
checking out Chris was checking in.
"Just when my day was going so well I
finish it off with this," Matt said dryly in Chris's general direction.
"Well Harmon you're not exactly the
bright spot in my day either. Not that it's any of your business but my nephew
has a date tonight and needed to borrow my car, so he dropped me off to work
early. Had I known I'd be treated to your wonderful wit I think I would have
just taken the bus or something."
"Mass transit doesn't allow
snakes," Matt retorted. "I pray for the poor girl who would have such
a severe lapse in judgment as to want to date something that's related to you.
At least no woman was stupid enough to marry you and furnish this planet with
conniving little weasels."
"It could still happen, you know take
away from the perfection of the two seeds you have running around. A mobster
father and a mother that could give Frosty the Snowman a real contest in the
cold department are a perfect combination for assets to the human
populous."
"Is that the best you can do Ramsey?
Don't answer, I'm sure you got a brain cramp coming up with that one. I'm going
home to my beautiful wife and daughter now, three minutes of Ramsey in one day
is more than enough to last me a lifetime." With that said Matt headed to
the elevator, his mind screaming the whole time, "Damn I hate that
guy!"
The doorbell to the Harmon home rang at about
6:30.
"Mom that's him," Ally said
excitedly. "How do I look?" Twirling around for her mother's approval
in the knee length yellow and blue floral dress, with her curly dark brown hair
piled atop her head, a few tendrils hanging freely against either side of her
face.
"You look beautiful but then again you
always do," Ellen told her with a smile.
"Don't be a mother Mom, really do I look
okay?" Taking a look in the foyer mirror mindlessly pulling at the curly
locks against her cheeks.
"Ally you look better than okay, and
even if you didn't if this fellow feels for you the way you obviously feel
about him you could be wearing a full length burlap bag with matching hat and
he'd think you just stepped off the cover of Elle Magazine."
Ally agreed with a smile, "I guess you're
right."
"I'm your mother, I'm always right. Go
on let the young man in I want to meet him."
"Okay," Ally went for the door and
now standing right before it she stopped for a moment to catch her breath.
On the other side of the door Jack was also taking
deep breaths, his heart was racing in double quick time. He started talking to
himself in an attempt to calm down, "Stay calm, so what she's the most
beautiful girl in the world, she wants to go out with you so you did something
good. Am I dressed right?" looking down at the black Docker's and white
Polo shirt he was wearing. "It's gonna be okay Jack, take a breath, just
take a breath," taking short quick breaths. As he exhaled the last breath
Ally opened the door.
"Hi," Ally said.
"Hi," Jack returned. "Wow you
look amazing."
Feeling her cheeks flush, "Thank you, so
do you."
He now felt his face flush. ''This is for
you,'' he said presenting her with a single red rose.
''This is beautiful Jack, thank you,'' taking
the rose and enhaling it's wonderful scent.
''It can't touch you in the beauty
department,'' he sincerely offered.
''Come in my mother wants to meet you,"
moving aside to allow him entry.
"Alright," making his way in,
praying the whole time that she'd like him. Maybe he should have brought a rose
for her too.
"Mom this is Jack. Jack this is my
mother Dr. Ellen Harmon."
"Dr. Harmon it's very good to meet
you," extending his hand to her in a firm handshake. "I see now where
Allison gets her beautiful looks," he said with a smile.
"Hmm, you right Ally he is
charming," Ellen said warmly slightly embarrassing both Ally and Jack.
"Have a seat," she offered.
Ally and Jack take a seat on the couch as
Ellen sits across from them on the love seat. She had to admit to herself they
made quite a handsome couple and the glow in both their eyes was unmistakable.
"So Ally tells me you're a second year
pre-med student at Columbia."
"Yes ma'am I'll be entering my second
year in the fall. I guess my uncle's interest in medicine got me involved in it
too."
"Your uncle's a doctor?"
"Yes he's a surgeon at General
Hospital."
"Really, I'm sure my husband and I both
know him. Allison's father is also a surgeon."
"Yes she told me. She mentioned his
specialty is cardiology."
"That it is, so who is your uncle?"
Before Jack could answer Matt came in
bellowing from the kitchen at the top of his lungs, "What the hell is
Chris Ramsey's car doing outside my house?!!!"
"Oh my god," Ellen mouthed as the realization of who her daughter's dream man was came to her.
